An Evening With Sky School

On 15 March 2018 the Sky School team organized its first event, ‘An Evening With Sky School’, in central London. The event turned out to be a wonderful evening of sharing and connecting with Sky School supporters and individuals with an interest in refugee and innovative education.

On 15 March 2018 the Sky School team organised its first ever event, ‘An Evening With Sky School’, held at the offices of Blackbaud Europe in London (UK). The event gathered over 80 people, some of whom have been involved with Sky School since the beginning as supporters, donors, volunteers and friends as well as educators and potential partners and people with an interest in refugee and innovative education. The event was a great opportunity to present what we have done so far and to inform a wide range of people of our next steps in creating a global high school for refugees.

To kick off the event, we heard from Dima AlMekdad, an advisor to Sky School who is originally from Syria and has extensive experience of creating opportunities for Syrian refugees. Dima gave insight into the pressing urgence of providing quality secondary education to displaced youth, and explained why she supports the work of Sky School. Polly and Mia, the co-founders of Sky School presented the results of the Sky School pilot course, as well as their plans to launch a full high school curriculum for refugees next year. You can learn more about the the pilot course in our news story here.

The event also served as the premiere of our new video about the first Sky School course, that ran from November to December of 2017. The video the video gives a great insight into the experiences of some of the students and facilitators. You can check out the video here.

In the coming year, the Sky School team will focus primarily on development of the full Sky School curriculum. As a part of that area of work, we have been working to establish a network of educators around the world, who are interested in sharing their skills and knowledge in the development of particular courses. If you are an educator interested in getting involved, make sure to fill out our interest form here.

We want to extend our gratitude to everyone who attended and made the evening so momentous, and to the volunteers who made the event possible, as well as Joel Akhurst (Social Films) for producing the video We also want to thank Dan Keyworth and Blackbaud Europe for generously hosting us in their amazing premises!
