Amala recognised as one of the top 100 education innovations worldwide

We are delighted to announce that for a second year running, Amala has been selected as one of the 100 leading innovations in K12 education from around the world. The selection was carried out by internationally renowned Finish education nonprofit, HundrED, and Amala was selected out of a total of 5000 innovations which were considered for the HundrED 2021 Global Collection.

Each year, HundrED’s Global Collection inspires a movement by helping pedagogically sound, ambitious innovations spread and adapt to multiple contexts across the world. To make this year’s Global Collection, a shortlist was reviewed by 150 Academy Members consisting of academics, educators, innovators, funders, and leaders from over 50 countries. In total, there were 3404 reviews by the HundrED Academy based on their impact and scalability that were then evaluated by HundrED’s Research Team to make the final selection.

Amala was chosen due to our unique approach to refugee education and potential to create a sustainable and scalable impact at a global level. Since 2017, our Amala programmes have reached nearly 400 young refugees in Greece, Kenya, Lebanon, Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Trinidad & Tobago. In the last year alone we have expanded our scope through partnerships  with local organisations in Cameroon, Malaysia and Uganda. We also launched our flagship programme - The Amala High School Diploma, in Amman, Jordan in June earlier this year. The Diploma is tailored specifically to displaced youth who have missed out on a secondary education, and their host communities.

“We are thrilled to have been selected as one of the HundrED’s 100 global innovations for a second time, and it marks the end of a momentous year Amala,” said Polly/Mia, Co-founder & Co-executive Director of Amala. “It has been an inspiring year as part of HundrED’s 2020 collection and has helped us reach new partners and contacts, as well as launch our Diploma Programme. We look forward to this next year and being recognised as a HundrED 2021 Innovation. Thank you HundrED!”

Amala will launch a second cohort of the Amala High School Diploma in Amman, Jordan in January, as well as expand the programme to Kakuma, Kenya where we have been running short courses since 2017.

With the global education ecosystem facing further disruption this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, HundrED’s platform to discover, research and share impactful innovations in education and how they have adapted to this new reality is even more important. The 2021 Collection highlights the encouraging willingness among educators, parents, and students to embrace new ways of teaching and learning.

“Spreading innovations across borders can be a gamechanger for education, worldwide,” said Saku Tuominen, Chairman & Creative Director of HundrED. “We will continue to encourage as many stakeholders as possible including schools, educators, administrators, students, and organisations to get involved so that we can work towards a positive future.”
