From passion to profession: Noor's journey through the Global Secondary Diploma Programme and beyond

This Amala Impact Story was produced by students from St Joseph’s Institution International (SJII), Amala partner school.

Noor, a 22-year-old video editor, was born and raised in Iraq. His life took a significant turn at 17 when he was displaced to Jordan. This interrupted his education, preventing him from completing his final year of high school. In June 2022, he joined Amala. There, he found a passion for video editing, allowing him to channel his creativity and develop his skills.

What drew you to the Amala Global Secondary Diploma?

I was not able to complete my high school diploma in Iraq due to the rules and regulations which stopped me from doing so. At the end of 2021, I heard about the Amala Global Secondary Diploma Programme. I wasn’t keen on joining at the time as I didn’t know what the programme was about. My decision changed in 2022, when my friends convinced me to join Amala. I signed up for the fourth cohort where I started my Amala journey. My favourite thing about Amala is spending time with people with the same interests, and the courses.

What was your most memorable experience at Amala?

I really enjoyed the hiking trip which was part of the programme. I found joy in taking in the scenery. This trip really helped me adjust to the programme and to get used to it.

Can you tell us about your Personal Interest Project at Amala?

I found my passion in this project from day 1. I grew fond of video editing and integrated it into my Instagram account. I had no prior experience and knowledge of video editing, so it was challenging. As the programme was about to conclude, I decided to teach myself through YouTube videos. Another challenge I faced was being hired by clients because at the start I had no portfolio to show them. When I started applying for jobs, I didn’t get any responses. In the end, I got a message for a job which I happily accepted. This was all thanks to the Personal Interest Project which inspired me to start video editing.

What are your plans for the future?

This year, I have big goals for my video editing. I started posting videos on YouTube, and building on my experiences during the Amala programme, I applied for a job at Upwork. I have also joined several Discord servers to ask for guidance and to post more of my videos to raise awareness. Thanks to the skills I learnt at Amala, I have made four times the amount of income than I was when I started my Personal Interest Project.

What are some struggles and challenges you have faced along the way?

I didn’t face that many challenges because I genuinely enjoy video editing and see it as part of my future. My biggest hurdle was not knowing where to start, as I didn’t take any formal courses. I taught myself everything through YouTube, learning as I went along.

And finally, a bit more about you - what are your hobbies and interests?

In my free time, I love watching movies, and playing and watching football. I’m a huge fan of Real Madrid!
