Amala welcomes its third cohort of students to the High School Diploma in Amman, Jordan

“I think you are going to enjoy Amala. It is a place for diversity, for people from different countries, different nationalities, different colours. It doesn't matter where you are coming from, what counts is your knowledge and what you are going to learn, and offer to your community, to the world.” Those were the words of Sharif, an Amala alumnus, welcoming our new students who form our third cohort of the Amala High School Diploma in Amman, Jordan!

We are delighted to announce that our Amman offices are once again full of students as our third cohort of the Diploma Programme is officially underway. Following two weeks of induction, our Amman team have started classes with a group of 25 students, while a group of 20 students have begun our 10 week English for Changemakers course to advance their English skills, before they join their fellow classmates on the Diploma Programme.

I know that working on yourself is the way for a good future, that is why I applied to Amala.
— Aisha, Cohort 3, Amman

In true Amala form, this cohort includes a mix of young displaced youth from Iraq, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, as well as students from Jordan. This new group carries a range of different experiences and backgrounds - some are in full time work, another a full time mother -  but they are all united in their commitment to get back into education and finish their secondary education.

Students will spend their weekends for the next 15 months with our Amman facilitation team, where they will cover Amala’s 10 courses of the programme, which range from Ethical Leadership to Science Informed Action to Arts & Cultural Expression. They will also undertake a Personal Interest Project (PIP), and pathways advising programme, enabling students to pursue further opportunities for higher education, work and entrepreneurship.

The few previous weeks were filled with excitement and motivation. I always enjoy it when new students are joining the Amala experience as I look forward to all the progress and development that is waiting for them!
— Fatima, Amala Learning Lead, Amman

At the heart of Amala’a learning is our support to enable students to develop agency, to positively influence their own life and the world around them. In their applications, students were asked to share a problem in their community they are passionate about changing. One of our Jordanian applicants decided to focus his answer on refugee education in Jordan,“One project I am really interested in is increasing the number of educated young men and women in Zarqa refugee camp, and I’ll do this by utilising my own education and experience at Amala.” We can’t wait to get to know this inspiring and diverse cohort of students better over the course of the programme, and see what sort of changemakers they turn out to be.
